Most automated instruments use an oscillatonometric principle. A suitable blood pressure cuff is placed in the patient’s arm. Care should be taken to select a suitable size cuff and tie it one inch above the elbow.

The most important determinant of the accuracy of the pressure is the width of the cuff. It should be 40% of the mid-circumference of the limb (length should be twice the width).
